About Nikita

Dr Nikita Vanderbyl is a writer, researcher, historian/art historian and sometimes teacher of history to undergraduate students. Her research has appeared in Australian Historical Studies, the La Trobe Journal, Aboriginal History, History Workshop Journal and on the Conversation.

Nikita's most recent article is 'Seeing Aboriginal Art: Settler Classifications of the
Work of William Barak' and was published open access in Australian Historical Studies.

Nikita has taught history, sociology and critical criminology for La Trobe University and Indigenous Studies at the University of Melbourne, as well a providing research assistance to historians and community members in Victoria. She's a member of the Australian Historical Association, the Professional Historians Association, and a past a counsellor for the Royal Historical Society of Victoria.

In 2024 Nikita completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Australian Legacies of Slavery project, at the University of Melbourne. She was also a research fellow with the School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences, University of Melbourne, investigating Indigenous plant use.
